Disciples

This summer, we focused heavily on Jesus in The Summit. Which is a good thing, because this is church! His church, his body. We believe in him and we follow him, as we seek to grow deeper in faith, following, and understanding; both individually and corporately.

This past weekend, we focused on Jesus still, yet in a different way. We talked about how believing in Jesus and following him shaped the disciples lives in the New Testament and in our own lifetime.

We asked the question: "What are things the disciples (or anyone in the Bible) did that showed they were following Jesus?"

Some of our answers:
healed people
taught about Jesus
went on mission trips
the boy who offered his 5 loaves and 2 fish*
Peter walked on water
got put in prison and got out of prison

*The boy who offered Jesus the food which would feed thousands of people - we don't often focus on his perspective of the story. I'm not sure if we know anything about this boy besides that he enjoyed fish & chips; maybe he was from England? Either way, this boy didn't have much to offer. Still, he offered it. What might have been going through his brain as he heard the disciples discuss their predicament? They were doubting they could feed everyone, their minds raced with mathematical equations, mesmerized at the pricy task at hand. Maybe he offered the food to the disciples and their King, maybe he was found, maybe he was selling it at a raised price. Whatever the case, this boy provided the beginning of a miracle - he took action and gave what little he had. We must as well. What we have to offer is never to small for Jesus.

After we discussed the disciples' actions, we focused on our world today and on what we are able to do with the lives we have. Those questions are important for us to ask. We find encouragement, motivation, and passion there.

Like the boy with five loaves and two fish, we may not imagine we have much to offer. But Jesus sees a feast where we see a meal for two. Our offering doesn't need to be gigantic, heroic, or legendary. Our offering needs to be whatever we have, for what we have is from our Kind and Creator.

So think - what am I able to do with the life I have? How can I glorify my King? Miracles are ready to happen, Jesus only asks that we come to him and offer what we have.
