The Lego Movie

After watching The Lego Movie, I noticed that there are several correlations that can be found between the story surrounding Jesus 2,000 years ago and the life of a Christian today. When we examine them closer, several characters in the movie seem to be exhibiting Christ-like character.

In the first part of the movie we have master builders, who are known to be experts in their field. In Jesus' life, we have people who are like the master builders who are known to be experts in the Law. These are the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other teachers of the Law. These Jews shunned Jesus and his followers. They were jealous of his popularity and refused to believe that he could be the One.

While Emmet, the main character in the movie, is certainly not Jesus, he was also shunned by the Master Builders. "This guy can't be the Special. He is an idiot." declared many of the Master Builders, clearing showing their feelings towards Emmet, the hero of the film. The Master Builders got outraged as it seemed that Emmet would bring destruction toward them.

Vitruvius was like John the Baptist, one of the first to recognize the truth that can be found in Jesus Christ. He saw the potential in Emmet and encouraged him to have courage to stand in front of the remaining Master Builders. In the movie, Vitruvius was the leader of the Master Builders. He had pointed the way to Emmet, and had prepared the way for people to follow him. John the Baptist was the one that prepared the way for our Lord Jesus Christ, reminding people to still keep hope for the One that is coming after him.

Lord Business, on the other hand, is like Saul/Paul in the book of Acts. Lord Business wished to kill all the Master Builders, especially Emmet. However, he changed his mind and his way when he came face to face with Emmet. In a similar way, Saul, whose mission it was to kill followers of Jesus, changed his way when he came face to face with Jesus.

Emmet is like a Christian who exhibited Christ-like behavior. For instance, in the beginning Emmet was so concerned about the instructions of how to build and living to the point of being entirely wrapped around society. He was focused on how everyone was acting and wanted to be the same as everyone else. Everything changed when he found the Piece of Resistance. He was declared the Special and soon found friends that would eventually help him on his mission.

Emmet, like a Christian being called by Jesus for the first time, went on a mission to save the world without knowing how or what to do. He was just like a newborn Christian, who needed friends who would help him grow so that he will be ready for the mission. He started becoming like a devoted Christian throughout the later part of the movie. We see this when he was strapped to the battery and risked his life to save his friends. He came back in a spectacular comet with the power of the Special. He soon was influencing others around him. In the end, the citizens of Bricksburg are like new Christians who live the new life of disciples of Jesus.
