God is.
Our ministry follows a curriculum. A few weeks ago, I taught off-curriculum. I had been reading and understanding the reality that American teenagers are often unable to communicate who God is. Ergo, (fancy word), I wanted to attack that foothold of the enemy.
We launched by watching the video by Dr. SM Lockridge provided via youtube and igniter media, that I hope you all have seen. It’s called “That’s my King” and is a poem he wrote to describe Jesus. After watching this, I gave the kids a challenge. We put two squares on the wall and had the kids fill them up with post-it notes, writing on them characteristics of God.
Next, we talked about Elijah and Elisha. (Elisha is the funniest of all prophets.) We compared the big event of Elijah calling down fire from heaven on Mt. Carmel and the seemingly small miracles of Elisha (that after receiving a double portion of the spirit after Elijah got swooped away) such as making an axhead float and freeing a deadly stew of death. (It was fun to have the kids shout “Oh my lord, it was borrowed!” and “Oh my lord, there is death in the pot!”)
We then highlighted the event of Elisha revealing the army of God to his servant and saying in 2 Kings 6:16, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” We also highlighted Elijah telling the people before the fire came down, saying in 1 Kings 18:21, “If the Lord is God, follow him. If Baal is god, follow him.”
Needless to say, it was fun and powerful. Let us not neglect to tell them who God is before they let the world paint a weak picture for them.
Our God is big, and he still does little stuff. He makes axheads float, sends down fire from heaven, cleanses stew of evil poison with flour and loved us so much to send his son AND resurrect him.

One kid described God as “pristine.” I laughed.
One kid described God as “describable.” That made me think. Our God is indescribable, yes. But the beauty of our King is that he was tangible, human, describable. Our God is. And thus, we are.
